You can help your child to maintain and strengthen his or her beginning reading skills by providing access to reading material during the summer months. The following list offers a variety of books for your child to explore. Most children will need to listen to and echo the text of the more challenging books on the list. Some of the books may be easy enough for your child to read alone. Your local librarian will be able to help you and your child to select the books of the appropriate level. In addition to the books on the list I highly recommend the Hello Reader@ (Scholastic) and Step into Reading@ (Random House) series.

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss

Biscuit by Alyssa Satin Capucilli

Ten Apples Up On Top by Theo LeSieg

Sheep In A Jeep by Nancy Shaw

Hop On Pop by Dr. Seuss

Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? by Bill Martin

Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman

Danny and the Dinosaur by Syd Hoff

Jump, Frog, Jump by Robert Kalan

Clifford series by Norman Bridwell

Henry and Mudge series by Cynthia Rylant

Nate the Great series by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat

Morris series by B. Wiseman

Extension Ideas:   Ask your child questions about the books you read together.
