First Grade: In first grade the children are encouraged to grow and learn in an active, positive environment. Each child is accepted and respected. The first graders are exposed to a variety of teaching methods. A typical day in first grade consists of whole group lessons, small group activities, and individual work. Reading, phonics, writing, language arts, math, religion, science, and social studies are part of the first grade curriculum. By the end of first grade the students will be able to write sentences, paragraphs, and stories. They will also be able to recognize over 200 high frequency words. Second Grade: Our goal in second grade is to provide a comfortable environment where each student is doing his/her best and experiencing success. In second grade the students find themselves delving deeper into subject areas. They expand their skills learned in first grade and add many new ones. Students work in large and small groups, and independently. They are encouraged to use manipulatives when learning a new skill. They are introduced to many hands-on activities and projects. Students is second grade prepare for and receive the Sacrement of Penance for the first time By the end of second grade students are expected to be able to write paragraphs and creative stories, as well as write in cursive and print neatly. Third Grade: The third grade students enjoy reading many different kinds of genres throughout the school year (fiction, non-fiction, realistic fiction, historical fiction, folk tales, biographies, poetry, and reader's theatre). In Social Studies the students learn about the cultures of many countries around the world. Two new skills that the students learn in mathematics are multiplication and division. The children learn to master the basic multiplication facts through 10. Third grade is one of the most exciting years in Religion class as the children prepare themselves for their First Holy Communion. It is truly an enjoyable experience for the whole St Barnabas community as our students receive Jesus for the first time.
